India, Suriname vow to add new momentum to ties, expand cooperation in economic sphere

On Wednesday, India and Suriname agreed to add new impetus to their bilateral business and investment relations, with the goal of enhancing collaboration in sectors such as health, energy, and defence.

The virtual 7th meeting of the India-Suriname Joint Commission was co-chaired by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mr. V Muraleedharan and Ambassador Mr. Albert R Ramdin of Suriname, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Business, and International Cooperation.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement that the discussions took place in an atmosphere of warmth against the basis of friendly ties between India and Suriname.

The two ministers stressed the importance of this process in the intensification of political dialogue, the analysis of bilateral relations and the exchange of views on regional and multilateral cooperation, the MEA said.

The ministers agreed to give new impetus to bilateral relations in the fields of business and investment, with the goal of strengthening cooperation in the fields of creative industries, health, traditional medicine, agriculture, mining, energy, defence, culture and education, consular cooperation.

The two sides were pleased to report that relations between India and Suriname, which have significant cultural and historical associations, are characterised by cordiality and a high degree of understanding and convergence of views on a variety of issues.

 

In the spirit of " South-South " cooperation, the two ministers recognised the value of executing development projects under concessional conditions.

They reported that the development partnership between India and Suriname comprises a wide spectrum of sectors, including power generation and transmission, general supply, and water supply networks.

Mr. Muraleedharan and Mr. Ramdin looked forward to early implementation of pipeline projects aimed at contributing to Suriname's energy stability, energy conservation and energy mix, the statement said.

They agreed to continue to team up on various issues through the framework of the Joint Commission, with a view to further improving and extending bilateral ties. It was decided that the next JCM meeting on a mutually convenient date will be held in Paramaribo in 2022, the MEA said.
