India surpasses 5 lakh Aadhaar-verified organ donation pledges, ranks third globally in organ transplants

India has achieved over five lakh Aadhaar-verified organ donation pledges within three years of launching the digital organ donation pledge portal in 2023, marking a significant milestone in strengthening the country's organ donation ecosystem. Addressing the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day event in New Delhi, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Ms. Anupriya Patel highlighted that annual organ transplants in India have increased to more than 20,000 over the past 12 years, making India the third-largest country globally in the number of organ transplants after the United States and China. Under the National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP), the Government is supporting infrastructure upgradation, transplant coordinators, organ transportation, capacity building and training of healthcare professionals, while financial assistance for economically weaker patients is being provided under the Rashtriya Arogya Nidhi.

To further strengthen the country's organ donation ecosystem, Ms. Patel launched the year-long 'Jug Jug Jiyo' Campaign, a national initiative to honour organ donors and their families and encourage greater public participation in organ donation. She also launched e-Pratyaropan, India's next-generation national digital platform for organ and tissue donation and transplantation, aimed at improving transparency, coordination and efficiency across the transplant ecosystem. The initiatives are expected to enhance awareness, encourage more citizens to pledge organ donation, strengthen the safe and timely transportation of organs, and improve access to life-saving transplants while reinforcing India's position as a global leader in organ transplantation and digital healthcare.
