India surpasses Japan as world's third-largest solar power generator: Report

India's ascent to the world's third-largest solar power producer in 2023, surpassing Japan, was underscored by a global energy think tank, Ember Report. The Global Electricity Review 2024, unveiled recently, provides an insightful examination of the global power landscape, drawing from data from 80 nations representing 92% of global electricity demand and historical data from 215 countries.

Ember's report highlights India's remarkable growth in solar generation, propelling it past Japan from a ninth ranking in 2015. Solar energy contributed 5.5% to global production in 2023, with India alone generating 5.8% of its electricity from solar sources. The trajectory of solar energy, pivotal for decarbonizing electricity and meeting rising demand, underscores the imperative for India and other nations to accelerate renewable capacity to achieve climate targets.
