India has emerged as the world’s second-largest solar growth market in 2025, surpassing the United States in annual solar capacity additions and further strengthening its position as a global leader in renewable energy. The country has crossed 155 GW of installed solar capacity, marking a significant milestone in its clean energy transition and contributing substantially towards achieving the target of sourcing 50% of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources. The achievement also places India ahead of schedule in meeting its commitments under the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The rapid expansion of solar energy capacity has been supported by sustained policy initiatives, infrastructure development and increasing investments in renewable energy. Government programmes aimed at accelerating solar deployment have played a crucial role in expanding access to clean energy while enhancing energy security and supporting sustainable economic growth across the country.
Flagship initiatives such as PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana have further strengthened the adoption of renewable energy at the household level, with more than 40 lakh households already benefiting from rooftop solar installations. The programme is helping reduce electricity costs for consumers while encouraging wider participation in India’s clean energy movement. The growth of the solar sector is also creating opportunities for domestic manufacturing, employment generation and technological innovation across the renewable energy value chain. Continued investments in solar parks, transmission infrastructure and distributed energy systems are expected to support future capacity additions and strengthen the country’s renewable energy ecosystem. India’s solar growth trajectory highlights its increasing contribution to global climate goals and reinforces its position as a key player in the worldwide transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy systems.
