India-Tanzania trade crosses Rs. 83,367 crore (US$ 9 billion) as both sides deepen economic partnership

India and Tanzania have witnessed a steady expansion in bilateral economic engagement, with trade between the two countries crossing Rs. 83,367 crore (US$ 9 billion) in 2025-26, up from Rs. 75,205 crore (US$ 8.64 billion) in the previous fiscal. The milestone was reviewed during the 5th session of the India-Tanzania Joint Trade Committee (JTC) held in Dar es Salaam on April 29-30, 2026. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trade and investment ties, while also discussing measures such as trade settlement in local currencies and facilitation of long-term business visas for Indian enterprises. The meeting, co-chaired by senior officials from both nations, served as a platform to evaluate progress since the last session in 2017 and identify new avenues for cooperation.

Key sectors identified for enhanced collaboration include digital public infrastructure, MSMEs, healthcare, mining, agriculture and energy. India offered to share its expertise in digital solutions such as real-time payments and DigiLocker, while both countries explored opportunities in e-commerce and regulatory cooperation. In agriculture, focus areas include technology transfer, agro-processing and trade in pulses like pigeon peas. India’s development partnership was highlighted through Lines of Credit exceeding Rs. 10,189 Crore (US$ 1.1 billion) for water infrastructure projects in Tanzania, expected to benefit over 6 million people across 24 towns. Discussions also covered cooperation in renewable energy, natural gas, shipbuilding and port infrastructure, alongside joint efforts in healthcare, including telemedicine and disease research. The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthening economic ties through broader sectoral engagement and faster implementation of initiatives.
