Minister of State for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Mr. Shantanu Thakur, announced that India aims to secure a 5% share of the global shipbuilding market by 2030 and develop 10 world-class shipyards through public-private partnerships and international collaborations. Addressing the CII Conference in Goa on India's Shipbuilding Roadmap towards Maritime Amrit Kal Vision 2047, he said the government’s shipyard modernisation programme will leverage automation, digital twin technology, and green shipbuilding innovations to achieve this target. A National Shipbuilding Policy is being formulated to streamline regulations, provide tax incentives, and offer a 10-year growth roadmap, including training 50,000 workers by 2030 and advancing R&D for autonomous and green vessels.
He highlighted that inland waterway cargo movement has risen over 320% since 2014, aligning with India’s Rs. 1,76,28,000 crore (US$ 2 trillion) export target by 2030 and the 2070 net-zero goal. He outlined plans for a national container shipping line by 2030, with 50% domestic production of container vessels by 2035, supported by the Maritime Development Fund for shipyard modernisation and green technology research. The government is incentivising clean-fuel shipping, aiming for 30% of India’s fleet to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), methanol, or hydrogen by 2047. Integration with the PM Gati Shakti programme will create coastal industrial clusters and improve connectivity. At the same time, ongoing Sagarmala projects will further enhance container capacity and green shipping corridors.
