India to host BRICS meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices in Lucknow

India will host the Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) countries in Lucknow from August 3-4, 2026, bringing together senior statistical officials from member nations to strengthen cooperation in official statistics, innovation and data dissemination. Held under India's BRICS Chairship 2026, the meeting is guided by the theme "Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability (BRICS)", while the BRICS Statistics Track adopts the theme "Quality Statistics as Driver of Change", highlighting India's focus on data quality, innovation, effective dissemination and people-centric statistical systems. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), representatives from Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will participate to strengthen collaboration in statistical publications, innovation in statistical systems and the exchange of knowledge and best practices.
The meeting will build on the long-standing BRICS Statistics Track, under which member countries have jointly published the Joint Statistical Publication (JSP) since 2010 and the Snapshot BRICS JSP since 2020 to provide harmonised statistical data for policymakers, researchers and the public. The Technical Meeting of National Statistical Offices, held on April 16-17, 2026, reviewed the preparation of the Joint Statistical Publication 2026 and Snapshot BRICS JSP 2026, while discussions focused on data harmonisation, innovation and timelines for member contributions. The meeting is expected to strengthen cooperation in macroeconomic and sectoral statistics, improve data dissemination and accessibility, and promote reforms in national statistical systems. Two side events will also be held on August 3 and August 4, focusing on "Unlocking the Potential of Administrative Data" and "AI Readiness in the Evolving Data Ecosystem", respectively, highlighting the role of administrative data and artificial intelligence in strengthening official statistical systems.
