A broad agreement was reached during the most recent meeting of the India-UK Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) to facilitate the exchange of experiences and best practices in the areas of working of commercial courts, alternate dispute resolution mechanisms like arbitration and mediation, use of technology in case management, justice dispensation and enforcement of contracts and in area of simple legislative drafting.
Law Secretary Dr. Niten Chandra served as the leader of the Indian delegation. On the Indian side, the Director Indian Law Institute, New Delhi, Member Secretary NALSA, and senior officers from the Department of Legal Affairs, Legislative Department, and Department of Justice participated in the discussions. Dr. Jo Farrar, Second Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Government of the UK, served as the leader on the UK side. The meetings were co-chaired by the two leaders.
Both nations agreed to share their experiences using technology for case management, judicial delivery, and contract enforcement. In a meeting of the Legal Services Committee (LSC), the issue of drafting regulations for admission of UK law firms and lawyers was also discussed.
