India will be first to hold satellite spectrum auction: TRAI Chairman

Telecom regulator TRAI Chairman Mr. P.D. Vaghela, at the Broadband India Forum Summit on SatCom, said that India will be the first country to auction spectrum for satellite communication.

Mr. P.D. Vaghela also stated that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will be making recommendations for satellite communication to Indian ministries, including Information and Technology, Space, and Telecom. These recommendations will be in order to formulate permissions as a pre-requisite for seamless business in the sector. This proposition is aimed to encourage and promote investment in the sector.

Mr. P.D. Vaghela added that TRAI will come up with a model for the auction of space in satellite communication, wherein TRAI is in consultation with experts and regulators worldwide for the same. A consultation paper is also proposed to be floated after prior discussions on the spectrum auction.
