On June 3, 2025, India won the presidency of the International Institute of Administrative Sciences (IIAS) during the Extraordinary General Assembly Meeting in Brussels. India polled 87 votes, compared to 54 votes by Austria, and will hold the presidency for the period 2025-28. The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances has represented India as a member state of the IIAS since 1998. The IIAS is a federation of 31 member countries, 20 national sections, and 15 academic research centres collaborating for scientific research on public administration. It maintains a close working relationship with the United Nations, participating in the UN's Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) and the UN Public Administration Network (UNPAN). For the 2025-28 presidency, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi nominated Secretary DARPG Mr. V. Srinivas in November 2024. The hearings were held in February 2025 in New Delhi. India, South Africa, Austria, and Bahrain submitted nominations. South Africa withdrew in May 2025, and the final election was held between India and Austria, with India securing 61.7% of the votes.
The Indian presidency of the IIAS will advance the vision of "Maximum Governance - Minimum Government," focusing on next-generation administrative reforms, digital empowerment of citizens, and digital transformation of institutions. It aims to bridge the North-South divide with an emphasis on unity and inclusivity. This marks the first time in the 100-year history of the IIAS that the election for the presidency was held by ballot, and it is the first time India has secured this historic mandate.
