Top officials of the Ministry of Water Resources of India and Bangladesh will meet on Tuesday to discuss and address issues related to river water sharing and flood forecasting, sources said on Monday.
As per the sources, the Indian delegation will be headed by Mr. Pankaj Kumar, Secretary of the Jal Shakti Ministry and Mr. Kabir Bin Anwar, Senior Secretary will head the delegations for Bangladesh.
The meeting will take place before the visit of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi to Bangladesh later this month.
As per the sources, the two sides would discuss water sharing between the rivers Manu, Muhuri, Khowai, Gumti, Dudhkumar and Dharla.
The discussions are also expected to take place on withdrawing of water from the Feni River to the town of Sabroom in Tripura.
In addition, discussions are also expected on a possible Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to draw water from the Surma River.
India and Bangladesh have a strong mechanism in place to address water issues at various levels. The Indo-Bangladesh Joint Rivers Commission (JRC) has been in operation since 1972.
It was formed with the aim to maintaining the link to enable the most effective joint effort to maximize the benefits of common river systems.
This enables meetings at ministerial, secretarial and technical level.
