The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports that Indian domestic air travel has greatly improved, reaching 85.7% of pre-covid 2019 levels in 2022.
IATA stated earlier this month that the improvement in air travel was anticipated to last the entire year of 2022 rather than just December. Domestic air travel and airline revenue significantly increased in India as worries about fresh COVID-19 outbreaks subsided.
According to IATA, India's domestic RPKs (Revenue Passenger Kilometres) increased by 48.8% in 2018 over 2021. Most significantly, aviation traffic in December 2022 came very close to matching that in December 2019 - falling short by just 3.6%.
Indian domestic ASK (Available Seat Kilometres) increased by 30.1% in 2022 when compared to the previous year. Among the other domestic markets in the Asia Pacific, domestic traffic as measured by RPK in Japan increased by 75.9% from 2021 to 2019 levels.
