The Indian Premier League has topped a new ranking that assesses the public's daily perception of sports brands across a variety of metrics. The IPL held Indians in its thrall for the second year in a row, according to market research firm YouGov's 2022 Sports Buzz Rankings in India, despite interruptions caused by covid-19 outbreaks.

According to the report, the rankings are based on scores that determine whether respondents have recently heard something positive or negative about a brand. The sports tournament came in second to the IPL at (49.2) and made a new entry in this year's rankings as India recorded its best-ever performance in the Olympics with a haul of seven medals, including a gold. In fact, according to the firm, the IPL only pips the games by 1.6 points at 50.8.

Despite India's failure to advance to the knockout stage, the ICC Cricket World Cup finished in third place (45.9), with a -0.4 drop in buzz score from the previous year. The FIFA World Cup also saw a drop in its score year over year, falling to fourth place (28.3). The Indian Super League, India's domestic football league, managed to maintain its fifth place finish (20.4). In comparison to last year's rankings, the Pro Kabaddi League has dropped three places to seventh (from 23.1 to 17.9).

Wimbledon was in sixth place with a buzz score of 18.0, and the Australia Open was in tenth place (13) with a buzz score of 18.0. The Asian Games took eighth place (15.3) and World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) took ninth place (13.3), respectively. SportsIndex, according to the company, operates in 35 markets around the world and uses 16 metrics to determine what 'Buzz' is.

The rankings were determined by asking 100 respondents simple questions such as: “Over the past two weeks, which of the following sports events/leagues have you heard something positive about?" and “Now which of the following sports/events leagues have you heard something negative about over the past two weeks?" etc. The Indian Premier League will be in its fifteenth season in 2022. The event will begin on April 2 and end on June 3rd.
