Indian private equity investments reach $70 bn in 2,000 deals in 2021

Indian private equity (PE) investments reached US$ 70 billion in 2021, with over 2,000 deals, up 87% from the volumes recorded in 2022.

According to Bain & Company's annual India Private Equity Report 2022, Consumer Tech and IT/ITES sectors together accounted for about 60% of the year's deal value at nearly US$ 44 billion.

The number of large cheque size investments increased significantly in 2022 with 11 deals for more than US$ 1 billion, including Flipkart, Hexaware, and Mphasis, compared to six in 2020.

In the most celebrated milestone for the year, exits totalling more than US$ 36 billion were unlocked in 2021, quadrupling fund exits compared to US$ 9 billion in 2020. 

According to the report, strategic sale has remained the most popular exit strategy, accounting for roughly half of all exits in recent years.
