The Indian Railways is soon to reach a historic milestone in its process of upgrading itself by developing the first High-Speed Test Track, estimated to be complete by March 2026. The new project has been undertaken by the Research, Designs, and Standards Organisation (RDSO), which falls under North Western Railway (NWR), to be constructed between Gudha & Thathana Mithri in the Jodhpur division of the state of Rajasthan, which would cost around Rs. 967 Crores (US$ 117 million). The new project has been estimated to span 64 km and would cater to a maximum speed of 220 kmph, allowing for rigorous testing of the locomotive at such high speeds.
Once constructed and put into operation, it will enhance Indian Railways' competency in evaluating safety and stability parameters, as well as the performance characteristics of future generations of rail transport, which are likely to operate at higher speeds. Situated about 70 km from Jaipur, this track showcases India's focus on advancing rail technology and infrastructure. Moreover, it would facilitate tests of track dynamics and signaling, as well as maintenance practices, thereby accelerating progress towards a faster rail network for India. Additionally, it would align with efforts to improve rail connectivity and overall travel experiences for users.
