Indian Railways Achieves 99.6% Broad Gauge Electrification

India has emerged as one of the world's leading nations in railway electrification, with 99.6% of its broad gauge network now electrified, making Indian Railways the second most electrified major railway system globally after Switzerland. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Railways Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the achievement reflects one of the fastest railway electrification programmes undertaken worldwide. Since 2014, Indian Railways has electrified 48,072 route kilometres, compared with 21,801 route kilometres electrified over the preceding six decades, while electrification has been integrated into all new railway line and multi-tracking projects. With electrification levels surpassing those of China (82%), Spain (67%), Japan (64%), France (60%) and the United Kingdom (39%), India has significantly strengthened its position as a global leader in sustainable railway infrastructure.

The rapid expansion of electric traction has enhanced operational efficiency while advancing India's clean transportation goals. According to NITI Aayog, rail transport emits only 11.5 grams of carbon dioxide per tonne-kilometre, nearly 89% lower than road transport. Diesel consumption for train operations has also declined from 293 crore litres in FY16 to 108 crore litres in FY25, saving nearly 185 crore litres of fuel and reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels. Supporting this transition, Indian Railways has commissioned over 1,260 MW of renewable energy capacity, comprising around 1,161 MW of solar power and 103 MW of wind power as of June 2026. With 15 railway zones, including Konkan Railway and Kolkata Metro, already achieving 100% electrification, continued investments in electrification and renewable energy are expected to improve energy security, reduce emissions and reinforce India's leadership in sustainable rail transport.
