The Indian Railways has announced a series of technology-driven measures aimed at enhancing passenger safety, comfort and operational efficiency. A key decision involves the introduction of modern composite sleepers, particularly for bridge approaches and critical sections such as points and crossings. These sleepers, made from mixed materials, are lighter than conventional iron and concrete variants while offering superior load-bearing capacity and durability. Their improved cushioning and adaptability to site-specific conditions are expected to significantly enhance ride quality, especially in sensitive track zones like bridges and junctions.
In addition, the Railways will deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based monitoring systems to strengthen track surveillance. Special AI-enabled devices, including Ground Penetration Radar, will be installed on inspection vehicles to assess the condition of the track foundation. This will enable early detection of structural issues, ensure timely maintenance and reduce risks. Further, a new technique Magnetic Particle Testing, will be adopted to improve the quality of welding in railway tracks by identifying minute defects in joints. Collectively, these measures underline the Railways’ commitment to leveraging advanced technology for safer and more reliable travel. The initiatives are also expected to reduce long-term maintenance costs while improving operational efficiency, reinforcing the focus on passenger-centric modernization.
