India's gas output rises 23% as RIL-BP fields start production

According to government data, India's natural gas production increased by 22.7% YoY in April 2021 as India's Reliance Industries Ltd. and its partner BP Plc increased production in the KG-D6 block on the east coast.

According to data released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, India’s natural gas production in April 2021 stood at 2.65 billion cubic meters (bcm), compared with 2.16 bcm in April 2020.

Although the output of the state-owned oil and gas company (ONGC) remained stable at 1.72 bcm, the output of oil fields operated by the private sector and joint ventures has tripled to reach 710.86 million standard cubic meters. Most of the 409.12 mmcm production came from the eastern offshore oil fields. The data does not provide separate on-site production.

Reliance-BP started the second natural gas discovery on the KG-D6 block into production in December 2020 and commenced exporting oil from the Satellite Cluster field in April 2021.

In April 2021, the crude processing volume increased by 35% YoY to reach 19.88 million tonnes. Crude oil processed by Reliance Industries Ltd.'s dual refinery in Jamnagar stood at 5 million tonnes, while Nayara Energy's crude oil production increased by 16.5% YoY to 1.6 million tonnes.

Public sector refineries increased their crude processing capacity by 62.2% YoY to 11.5 million tonnes. The single export refinery of RIL had a capacity of 77.7% in April 2021, while the other older unit had an operating rate of 102%.
