Tata Sons Pvt Chairman, Mr. Natarajan Chandrasekaran stated that the pandemic has transformed the nature of how employees and organisations work and boosted the adoption of digital technologies. It is also driving a hybrid model where work broadens beyond offices and employs more women.
On Tuesday, Mr. Chandrasekaran addressed the Qatar Economic Forum and stated that while the office continues to be an essential element where employees are expected to gradually return, however, the world would still continue to remain at its new norms. The Indian stakeholders, joined by fellow companies such as Mr. Mark Dixon, Chief Executive Officer, Iwg Plc, stated workplaces would benefit from offering staff greater flexibility, leveraging technology.
In 2020, the pandemic created a challenge for every business in India imposing lockdown restrictions. However, within a week-time, in companies like Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. ~ 0.5 million employees started working from home, maintaining to deliver software support and projects to customers such as retailers, Wall Street banks and airlines.
Earlier, Tata Consultancy also announced to have only a fourth of its employees working from office on any given day by 2025.
Mr. Chandrasekaran stated that many businesses asked its employees to return to offices. He added that firms would need to plan and adopt to a middle model for future work.
He added, “Let us not limit ourselves to only home and office when it is the hybrid model that has work. There might be a ‘satellite office’, a concept of third place, that could emerge in future.”
Mr. Chandrasekaran stated, in India’s situation, it could also witness advanced workplace diversity, another positive result of a hybrid model.
He added, “Only 23% of women who could be possibly working are employed due to challenges such as the lack of social infrastructure, commuting, etc. We should leverage this potential opportunity to grow and expand.”
