Indore to set up India’s First Public-Private Partnership (PPP) green waste processing plant

Indore is set to establish India’s first green waste processing plant under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, marking a significant milestone in urban waste management and sustainability. Developed under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, the plant aims to convert green waste into valuable resources, reinforcing the city’s commitment to environmental conservation. Located on 55,000 square feet of land in Bicholi Hapsi, the facility will recycle wood and branches into wooden pellets, providing an eco-friendly alternative to coal. The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) will earn Rs. 3,000 (US$ 34.66) per tonne in royalty for supplying waste, ensuring financial viability. Indore generates around 30 tonnes of green waste daily, peaking at 60-70 tonnes during autumn, with institutional waste collection also integrated into the system.

The plant, operated by Astronomical Industries Private Limited, will employ a drying process over three to four months to reduce moisture content by 90%, converting waste into fine sawdust. This sawdust will be repurposed for biodegradable packaging, furniture manufacturing, fertilisers, and disposable plates, reducing plastic usage. Composting pits in municipal gardens will also process garden waste, enhancing overall waste management efforts. Wooden pellets from the plant will be supplied to the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and other industries as a clean energy source, helping control the Air Quality Index (AQI). The initiative aligns with the Garbage-Free Cities vision under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, promoting a cleaner and greener environment while generating additional revenue for the municipal corporation.
