India's steel sector is being encouraged to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies to enhance productivity, operational efficiency and global competitiveness. Speaking at Chintan Shivir 2026 on Digitalisation in the Steel Sector, organised by the Ministry of Steel, Union Steel Minister Mr. H.D. Kumaraswamy emphasised that the future of the industry will be shaped not only by production capacity but also by the development of intelligent and technology-driven manufacturing ecosystems. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Digital Twins, Robotics and Advanced Data Analytics are transforming steel production worldwide by improving efficiency, optimising operations and supporting data-driven decision-making. Digitalisation is becoming increasingly important as India strengthens its position as one of the world's fastest-growing steel markets.

The Government has set ambitious targets of achieving 300 million tonnes (MT) of steel production capacity by 2030 and 400 MT by 2035, supported by strong domestic demand from infrastructure development, manufacturing expansion under the Make in India initiative, renewable energy projects and rapid urbanisation. While growth prospects remain strong, the sector must address challenges related to raw material security, operational efficiency, decarbonisation, modernisation and export competitiveness. Digital technologies and automation are expected to play a critical role by enabling predictive maintenance, reducing unplanned downtime, improving workplace safety and minimising human errors. The increased adoption of advanced technologies is expected to strengthen productivity, support sustainable growth and enhance India's competitiveness in the global steel industry.
