On Wednesday, the IT company Infosys Ltd stated that it had become carbon neutral thirty years ahead of the 2050 deadline set by the Paris Agreement.

"Complying with PAS 2060 requirements, Infosys is now carbon neutral," the Bengaluru-based company stated.

In recent years, Infosys has said that it has reduced its electricity consumption per capita by more than 55% with the ambition of switching to renewable energy. Infosys was also India's first signatory to the RE100 programme, a global initiative by businesses dedicated to 100 % renewable energy use.

A portfolio of community-based carbon offset projects focusing on the socio-economic growth of rural communities and contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals has been successfully developed, Infosys said. Not only do the programmes counter climate change, but they also help more than 100,000 rural families.

Mr. N. R. Narayana Murthy, founder, Infosys, said, “Longevity and success for a company comes from living in harmony with the context in which it operates. Right from the first day, Infosys has recognized and fulfilled its responsibilities towards overcoming the challenges in our context. It has also taken on new responsibilities like reducing carbon emission, improving air quality, optimally using water and solar power.”

Over 44% of the electricity consumption of Infosys was met from renewable energy sources in FY20. The company has also invested in 60 MW of power for solar PV.

Infosys will continue to be "carbon neutral across Scope 1 , 2 and 3 emissions per year as part of its 2030 environmental , social and governance (ESG) vision, as well as remove 75% of Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions and minimise by 30% absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions."

To empower 10 million plus people with digital skills and over 80 million lives with technology for good programmes in e-governance, healthcare and education, Infosys will extend reskilling initiatives. Infosys said it would cultivate an inclusive and gender-diverse workforce and further improve standards for data privacy and information security across global activities.

Mr. Salil Parekh, CEO & MD, Infosys, said, “The company’s ESG roadmap for 2030 reflects its continued aspiration to be a well-governed model organization for diverse talent with an inclusive workplace and community strategies to leverage technology for good".
