The domestic construction equipment industry is poised for strong expansion and is expected to surpass China to become the world’s second-largest market by 2030, according to Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, JCB India, Mr. Deepak Shetty. He said the sector requires continued government focus on infrastructure development and a supportive scheme for exporters to drive growth. India currently has an annual construction equipment volume of around 95,000 to 1,00,000 units, compared to China’s 1,75,000 units and the United States’ 2,50,000 units. He noted that the industry experienced softer volumes this year. However, improved monsoons and progress on tariff discussions with the United States could support a recovery in 2026. Emphasising the need to enhance rural infrastructure, he said additional funding support for states would help accelerate project execution. He also highlighted that expanding exports is essential as global markets become more accessible through Free Trade Agreements.
JCB India exports to over 135 countries and expects the domestic construction equipment market to grow rapidly over the next five years, supported by rising mechanisation, particularly in agriculture, where equipment usage remains relatively low. Industry volumes are expected to moderate to around 90,000 units in 2025 from 1,00,000 units in 2024 due to tariff-linked disruptions in shipments to the United States. JCB India anticipates double-digit growth next year in both domestic sales and exports after volumes ease from 64,500 units in 2024 to around 57,000 units in 2025. The company exported 14,000 units in 2024, including 10,000 units to the United States, and expects to export around 11,500 units this year despite tariff challenges. Strong monsoons and infrastructure activity in states such as Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra are expected to support domestic demand. He added that the company is advancing hydrogen-compatible machinery and specialised equipment for railways and defence, and will introduce a 52-tonne excavator designed in India.
