The installed base of handsets with 5G capabilities has surpassed 50 million in India as it gears up for the 5G era, according to the latest research from Counterpoint's Market Monitor service.

The second quarter of 2022 saw the highest-ever share of 5G smartphone shipments at 29% of total shipments.

The government has reached new heights in introducing the 5G technology with an auction of over Rs. 1.5 lakh crore (US$ 18.91 billion) for the 5G spectrum.

India's total installed base of smartphones surpassed 600 million (60 crore) in the April–June quarter as shipments increased by 9% YoY but decreased by 5% QoQ to reach around 37 million units.

The increase in the share of the higher price segments drove a 10% increase in the average selling price (ASP) for smartphones in retail.

The overall mobile handset market in India increased 6% YoY while declining 9% on a quarterly basis. The feature phone market registered a decline of 17% primarily due to the decline in consumer demand
