International conference focuses on the role of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes, India’s green transition, and inclusive sustainability in shaping India’s industrial policy

The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, organized an international conference on “Navigating the Future: Industrial Policy and Global Competitiveness” from January 17 to 19, 2025, at NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad. The event, held in collaboration with the Centre for International Trade and Business Laws (NALSAR), the World Trade Institute (WTI), and the World Trade Organization (WTO) India Chairs Programme, focused on the role of Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, India’s green transition, and inclusive sustainability in shaping industrial policy and global trade competitiveness. Key discussions revolved around WTO regulations ensuring fair trade practices, India’s role in global supply chains for critical raw materials, and balancing free trade with protectionism in response to China’s rise and United States policy shifts. Experts, including former WTO Appellate Body members and senior policy leaders, emphasized the importance of transparent and cost-effective industrial interventions aligned with global trade rules. 

In the plenary session, Former Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Mr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, underscored the need for well-structured PLI schemes and economic strategies that integrate security and trade priorities. Mr. Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs, highlighted India's role in driving energy transition and industrial self-sufficiency. Several renowned trade scholars, including Dr. Werner Zdouc, Dr. Isabelle Van Damme, and Professor Abhijit Das, contributed insights on trade policies and value chain integration. The conference also marked the launch of CTIL’s monthly newsletter, “Investment Law Compass: Navigating through the Global Investment Framework,” to provide regular updates on global investment laws. In the valedictory session, the Head of CTIL, Professor James J. Nedumpara, emphasized the conference’s success in fostering global collaboration on industrial policy.
