Jawaharlal Nehru Port in Mumbai has emerged as the world's fastest-growing container port, according to Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal. In a social media post, Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal said the port has risen to the 21st position globally, recording 13.6% growth in container throughput during the first half of 2026. He noted that the port outpaced all other ports in the world's top 30 in terms of growth during this period.
Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal said that India's maritime sector has achieved new milestones over the past 12 years under the vision of Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, highlighting the country's journey from being absent in global rankings to emerging as home to a leading global port. The development underscores the growing competitiveness and scale of India's port infrastructure on the world stage, reflecting sustained investment and reform in the maritime and shipping sector over the past decade.
