JIMEX 2022: India, Japan begin joint naval drills in the Bay of Bengal

The Indian Navy is hosting the sixth Japan-India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22), which officially began in the Bay of Bengal on September 11, 2022, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Rear Admiral Mr. Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, is in charge of the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) vessels, and Rear Admiral Mr. Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, is in charge of the Indian Navy vessels.

JIMEX, which started in Japan in 2012, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with this edition. Additionally, it coincides on the same day as the 70th anniversary of India and Japan's diplomatic ties. JIMEX 22 aims to strengthen the high level of interoperability between the two countries' maritime forces through complex exercises in the surface, subsurface, and air domains.
