With an average download speed of 19.3 megabits per second (mbps), Reliance Jio continues to remain the fastest mobile network, while Vodafone registered the highest upload speed in September, according to the latest data from telecommunication regulator Trai.

According to the Trai data updated on October 10, Idea Cellular Network (now Vodafone Idea) followed Jio with a download speed of 8.6 mbps, Vodafone 7.9 mbps and Bharti Airtel 7.5 mbps.

While Vodafone and Idea have combined their mobile businesses, Trai evaluated their success separately as both companies are currently on the integration of networks.

The research follows a study published by the private company OpenSignal in September in 49 cities, announcing that Bharti Airtel has the highest download speed in India.

Average network speed was determined by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) from data collected at pan-India level using its MySpeed application on a real-time basis.

According to the Trai map, the average speed of all private telecommunications operators increased in September as compared to the data reported in August.

In September, download speed on the Reliance Jio network increased by 21% to 19.3 mbps from 15.9 mbps in August 7% on the Airtel network to 7.5 mbps from 7 mbps, and 1-3% on the Vodafone and Idea networks.

The download speed allows to access content from different applications, while the upload speed allows subscribers to share content such as images and videos.

Vodafone reported the highest average upload speed of 6.1 mbps, followed by Idea with an upload speed of 5.9 mbps, 3.4 mbps for Bharti Airtel and 3.3 mbps for Jio network.
