India’s telecom sector added 2.7 million active mobile subscribers in June 2025, following a strong addition of 7.3 million in May 2025. Growth was driven by Metro and A Circles, which together contributed 3.9 million new users, offsetting losses in smaller B and C Circles. Reliance Jio led with 2.4 million additions, followed by Bharti Airtel with 1.2 million. Jio also gained twice the number of wireless users as Airtel, with Vi and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) losing 2,17,816 and 3,05,766 users respectively. Jefferies noted this as the fourth consecutive month of Jio’s outperformance in active user additions, with the company expanding its market share by 130 basis points to 43%.

Circle-wise analysis showed Jio gaining in Metro, A, and B Circles, while losing in C Circles. Bharti Airtel gained in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Mumbai, and West Bengal, but lost subscribers in Bihar, Kerala, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh (East). Despite Vi’s ongoing decline, the rate of subscriber loss moderated, with its 4G user base increasing by 0.7 million in June after a 1.0 million rise in May. The industry recorded 22.3 million new active users in H1 2025, indicating robust growth potential. However, high mobile number portability (MNP) requests at around 14 million in June suggest elevated churn levels due to tariff hikes, potentially increasing selling and general administrative (SG&A) expenses for telecom operators.
