Kashmir's handmade product exports have surpassed the Rs. 300 crore (US$ 34.75 million) mark in Q1 of FY26, representing the highest figures for this period in the last four years, an official announced on Saturday. The Handicrafts and Handloom Department, Kashmir, reported that handmade products worth Rs. 309.62 crore (US$ 35.87 million) were exported to various overseas destinations in Q1 of FY26, a significant increase from Rs. 126.90 crore (US$ 14.70 million) during the same quarter last year. The department is aiming for craft exports to exceed Rs. 1,500 crore (US$ 173.77 million) during the FY26, provided that global conflicts subside. Higher exports of craft products to international destinations directly contribute to the welfare of Kashmir's renowned artisans and weavers. Last year, craft products valued at Rs. 733.59 crore (US$ 84.98 million) were exported, with global conflicts significantly impacting these figures.

While Kani, Sozni shawls, and hand-knotted carpets continue to be the leading export products, other items such as crewel, papier mache, chain stitch, and wood carving are also being exported. The official urged exporters to take advantage of the Export Subsidy Scheme notified by the Government. This scheme offers an incentive of 10% of the total volume of GI-registered handloom/handicraft export products to any country, with a maximum reimbursement of up to Rs. 5 crore (US$ 5,79,240) for eligible exporters registered with the Department. Highlighting the government's strategy for the welfare of the artisan community, the official mentioned that the Department has a well-established Design Studio at the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology and unique prototypes conceived by the School of Designs and Craft Development Institute. Business stakeholders were encouraged to utilize these designs and packaging models to enhance the value of their products in high-end global markets.
