For nearly 40 years, the Kolkata Metro Railway, India's first Metro built by Indian Railways on October 24th, 1984, has served as a lifeline for Kolkata.
The electricity to Metro Rake is supplied to rolling stock in Kolkata Metro Railway at 750V DC through steel Third Rail. The Third Rail Current Collector (TRCC), composed of steel and mounted atop a metro rake, collects current from the Third Rail. For the previous 40 years, the Kolkata Metro Railway has relied on steel Third Rail. In addition to installing steel Third Rail as a retrofit in existing corridors, Kolkata Metro Railway has now chosen to employ composite aluminium Third Rail in all new corridors that are being constructed.
With the construction of this Metro Railway, Kolkata will join the exclusive club of the metro systems in London, Moscow, Berlin, Munich, and Istanbul that have switched from steel to aluminium for their third rails. In this regard, Metro Railway Kolkata has issued a tender for the replacement of the current Third Rail in the first phase, which will cover the segment between Dumdum and Shyambazar. Work would be carried out from Shyambazar to Central and J D Park to Tollygunge in the second phase. The third phase will cover the stretch from Kavi Subhash (New Garia) to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge). As a result, the complete length of the 35 RKm mainline steel Third Rail will be replaced in stages.
