The Tourism Department of Ladakh has launched a Holistic Homestay Support Framework to strengthen community-based tourism and create sustainable livelihood opportunities in rural areas of the Union Territory. The initiative was formally launched in Leh by Tourism Secretary Mr. Sanjit Rodrigues, with the objective of equipping local homestay operators with the skills and knowledge required to provide quality tourism services. The programme is designed to promote responsible and community-driven tourism while enabling rural households to transform homestays into viable micro-enterprises that generate employment and income for local communities.
As part of the framework, the department has introduced a 21-day structured training curriculum for homestay owners aimed at enhancing operational capabilities, service standards and hospitality practices. The training programme focuses on skill development, tourism management and best practices to ensure that homestay operators can cater effectively to domestic and international visitors. The initiative also complements broader government efforts to promote village-based tourism. Under the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram (PM-JUNGA) initiative, the Centre has approved the creation of three homestay clusters in Ladakh, where 111 homestays across 19 villages have been identified for development. By strengthening capacity building and promoting community participation, the framework aims to enhance the tourism ecosystem in Ladakh while preserving local culture, traditions and sustainable livelihoods in remote Himalayan villages.
