Minister of Commerce and Industry, Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and Textiles, Mr. Piyush Goyal, said on June 20 that the proposed free trade agreement (FTA) will give greater market access to several domestic sectors such as textiles, leather, and sports goods in the EU, ahead of the next round of negotiations between India and the EU at the end of this month.
After an eight-year hiatus, the two sides resumed discussions on June 17 to reach an agreement on trade, investments, and geographical indications (GI). A Geographical Indication (GI) is a label that is applied to items that have a specific geographical origin and that have traits or a reputation that are related to that origin.
The next round of negotiations will take place from June 27-July 1 in New Delhi.
