India is taking a significant leap forward in accelerating the decarbonisation of industry, with several leading companies teaming up with Swedish technology leaders to launch seven pioneering projects focused on reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the cement and steel industries. As India moves closer to its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070, eliminating emissions from the cement and steel industries is essential to support the long-term expansion and sustainability of infrastructure, industrial growth, and national climate objectives. The projects selected by the Department of Science and Technology (Government of India) and by the Swedish Energy Agency through their Lead IT industry transition partnership will complete pre-pilot project feasibility assessments of emerging technology.
The teamwork created through this collaboration includes several leading players from the Indian manufacturing sector, including Tata Steel, JK Cement, Ambuja Cements Ltd, Jindal Steel, Prism Johnson, along with some of the world's leading innovators in this space - Cemvision, Kanthal, and Swerim. Also, it includes high-level academic collaboration with leading Indian universities, including IIT Bombay, IIT-ISM Dhanbad, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Hyderabad, and Datta Meghe College of Engineering. This strong educational and research collaboration provides the intellectual and technical capacity to validate industry expertise, develop next-generation technology solutions, and the innovations necessary to meet the future needs of the Indian economy.
