The National Turmeric Board, inaugurated by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal, aims to enhance international turmeric exports and double production to 20,00,000 tonnes within the next five years. The board will focus on research and development, promoting value-added turmeric products, and leveraging India’s traditional knowledge. India currently leads global turmeric production, contributing 70% of the world’s supply, and the government’s goal is to increase production and exports significantly.

With over 30 varieties grown across 20 states, India is the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric. In the 2022-23 period, India cultivated turmeric across 3,24,000 hectares, producing 1,161,000 tonnes. The government expects turmeric exports to reach Rs. 8,657 crore (US$ 1 billion) by 2030. Palle Ganga Reddy has been appointed as the board’s first chairperson, with its headquarters in Nizamabad, Telangana. The board will include representatives from key ministries and turmeric-producing states, aiming to further boost India’s dominance in the global turmeric market.
