For the first time in India, L&T Construction, the construction arm of Larsen & Toubro, the US$ 21 billion technology, engineering & construction conglomerate, has 3D printed a G+1 (Ground plus one) building with reinforcement.

As the country remains competitive with the goal of building 60 million houses under the Housing for All programme by 2022, this accomplishment would definitely give the mass housing segment a major boost, the company said.

Mr. M V Satish, director & senior executive vice president (Buildings), said, “3D concrete printing is one of the technology disruptive technologies with the potential to fundamentally redefine construction methodologies, and I am absolutely delighted that we are well placed to push boundaries of automated robotic construction by demonstrating our increasing expertise in 3D printing.”

He said, “3D printing would not only speed up the pace of construction but will also greatly increase the quality of construction.”

The 3D printed building, which has an area of 700 sq. feet and is situated at the Kanchipuram facility of L&T Construction, has been constructed with a special, in-house produced concrete mix using standard construction materials that are available indigenously. The building was printed using welded grid with both vertical reinforcement bars and horizontal distributors, fulfilling requirements in the Indian Codes and maximising construction expense.

3D printing is a process in which the material is printed under computer control. Printing quick prototypes, complex shapes and small batch processing using special polymers, metal alloys, etc. is primarily used in manufacturing industries. 3D concrete printing is still mostly in development across the globe.
