Madhya Pradesh’s Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan has emerged as a notable model of water conservation and sustainable resource management, attracting international recognition for its community-driven approach. Launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, the initiative focuses on the rejuvenation of rivers, ponds and traditional water bodies while promoting responsible water-use practices across the state. The campaign has evolved into a mass movement supported by extensive public participation, reflecting the growing importance of community engagement in addressing environmental challenges. Its achievements were highlighted during the seven-day “Sadanira Samagam” held at Bharat Bhavan in Bhopal, where diplomats from several countries, including Cyprus, Fiji, Mexico, Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Ecuador, praised the programme as an innovative response to the global water crisis. The visiting delegates highlighted the campaign’s success in combining environmental conservation with public awareness and cultural engagement, while several countries expressed interest in replicating similar initiatives to address their own water management challenges.
The state government reported that more than 2.12 lakh water conservation structures have been completed under the campaign against a target of 3.66 lakh, demonstrating significant progress in strengthening water security and climate resilience. Foreign representatives commended Madhya Pradesh’s efforts to integrate environmental stewardship with cultural heritage, describing the model as both practical and socially inclusive. Officials from Mexico, Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Ecuador emphasised the importance of community participation in achieving long-term sustainability goals, while Ecuador indicated plans to organise a similar event inspired by the state’s initiative. By linking conservation efforts with citizen engagement and traditional knowledge systems, the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan has strengthened Madhya Pradesh’s position as a leader in sustainable water management. The programme also highlights India’s growing role in developing scalable environmental solutions that can contribute to global discussions on climate adaptation, water security and sustainable development.
