India’s major ports recorded a historic performance in 2025-26, handling 915.17 million tonnes (MT) of cargo, surpassing the annual target of 904 MT and registering a year-on-year growth of over 7%. This achievement reflects the sector’s strong recovery, improved efficiency, and sustained growth momentum driven by policy reforms and infrastructure upgrades. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways highlighted that enhanced operational performance, capacity expansion, and better logistics connectivity have played a key role in boosting cargo handling volumes. The milestone also underscores India’s growing prominence in global maritime trade and its continued focus on modernising port infrastructure to support economic growth.

Among individual ports, Deendayal Port Authority emerged as the top performer with 160.11 MT of cargo handled, followed by Paradip Port Authority at 156.45 MT and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority at 102.01 MT. Other major ports such as Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Chennai, and New Mangalore also made significant contributions to the overall volume. In terms of growth rates, Mormugao Port Authority recorded the highest increase at 15.91%, followed by Kolkata Dock System at 14.28% and JNPA at 10.74%. The government attributed this performance to continuous investments in port modernisation, improved efficiency and seamless logistics systems. The record cargo handling further reinforces India’s ambition to strengthen its position as a leading maritime nation and enhance trade competitiveness globally.
