Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Mr. Jitin Prasada, highlighted India's vision for developing artificial intelligence (AI) "in India, for India, and for all" at the India Internet Governance Forum (IIGF) 2024, held on December 9-10, 2024. He underscored the transformative role of AI and the internet, calling for solutions addressing governance challenges and fostering an inclusive, secure, and open digital future. Citing Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, he noted the internet's significance as the backbone of economies and societies, akin to rivers and highways in earlier eras. India’s commitment to shaping the United Nations’ Global Digital Compact (GDC) aims to establish shared principles for global equitable and secure digital technologies.

He lauded India’s digital progress, including milestones like UPI, Aadhaar, and Digital India, which serve as global benchmarks. With 95% of villages connected via 3G/4G, even in remote areas, and over 600 districts hosting tech-enabled startups, half led by women, India’s digital ecosystem is thriving. However, he stressed addressing cybersecurity, misinformation, and network disruptions to ensure resilient infrastructure. Emphasising sustainability, he urged stakeholders to address challenges like high energy consumption in data centres and e-waste. He highlighted the need for collaboration among users and stakeholders to integrate advanced security protocols and sustainable practices, ensuring technology becomes a force multiplier for all citizens.
