Ahead of the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, Free Stream Technologies, Lava International, and Human Mobile Devices (HMD) Global have unveiled plans to introduce Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) phones to cater to growing consumer demand. D2M is an innovative broadcasting technology that utilises terrestrial Television broadcast airwaves to deliver live TV, video, audio, and text messages directly to mobile phones without requiring Wi-Fi or internet access. This technology will enable consumers to access multimedia content, including entertainment, sports, educational programming, and emergency alerts, without an internet connection, thus contributing to Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi's vision for a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India). The initiative also supports the "Make in India" and "Design in India" campaigns, with devices powered by Tejas Networks' Security Level(SL)-3000 D2M chipsets.

The collaboration between Free Stream Technologies, Lava International, and HMD Global marks a significant step towards establishing a viable device ecosystem for large-scale deployment of D2M technology across India. According to the Director of Free Stream Technologies, Mr. Sumeet Nindrajog, Lava and HMD's efforts are pivotal in enabling the nationwide rollout of affordable D2M-enabled devices. Tejas Networks has developed a core network platform to deliver targeted ads, educational content, and emergency alerts, further empowering consumers. The initiative, which follows successful proof-of-concept trials led by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and Prasar Bharati, underscores India’s growing technological capabilities and the strategic collaboration between India and the United States. This partnership demonstrates the potential for democracies to collaborate in advancing global technological progress.
