In a partnership with the trade association Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), Facebook's parent company Meta announced that they would train 1 million traders to use the WhatsApp Business App over the course of three years. On June 27, in honour of World MSME Day, Meta also unveiled the opening of its Meta Small Business Academy (MSBA). This initiative came out of Meta's commitment to upskill 10 million small businesses by the year 2021, particularly for new business entrepreneurs and marketers who want to learn digital marketing techniques to grow on the Meta applications.

To reach MSMEs across the nation, the course module and exam are accessible in seven languages: English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu

According to a survey conducted in 2022 for Meta by the market research firm IPSOS Public Affairs, 91% of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in India using digital tools said that messaging apps and tools are a very important way to connect with customers. More than half of respondents said that WhatsApp has helped their business gain access to more customers.

As per the company, the collaboration between CAIT and Meta will be carried out through thousands of trade associations under CAIT.
