META, the parent company of Facebook, has announced plans to establish its first Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled data centre in India through a partnership with Reliance Industries Ltd. (RIL). The facility will be developed in Jamnagar, Gujarat, with an initial capacity of 168 megawatts (MW), marking a significant investment in India’s digital infrastructure ecosystem. Under the agreement, Reliance Industries will develop and operate the facility, while META will lease the infrastructure with options for future expansion. The company stated that India’s large digital user base, rapidly expanding technology ecosystem and growing adoption of AI-driven services make the country an attractive destination for long-term investment. The proposed facility is expected to bring advanced computing infrastructure closer to one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets, strengthening META’s global AI capabilities while supporting India’s digital transformation agenda.
Reliance Industries will provide end-to-end services throughout the project lifecycle, including design, construction, utility management, renewable energy integration, network connectivity and managed services. The data centre is expected to be completed within two years and will support the growing demand for AI computing, cloud services and digital applications. The project also reflects increasing global interest in India as a strategic hub for data infrastructure and emerging technologies. Industry experts believe investments in large-scale AI infrastructure will enhance the country’s technological capabilities, attract further investments and support innovation across sectors such as digital services, e-commerce, financial technology and advanced analytics. The collaboration between META and Reliance Industries is expected to strengthen India’s position in the global AI ecosystem while contributing to employment generation, infrastructure development and long-term growth of the digital economy.
