India’s millennials are leading the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) for shopping, with 84% using AI-powered tools to search for products, compare options and make purchase decisions, ahead of Gen Z at 74%, according to McKinsey & Company’s Agentic Commerce Consumer Survey conducted in June 2026. Adoption among Generation X consumers stood at 74%, while 56% of baby boomers used AI tools for shopping. The findings indicate growing use of AI across generations and highlight India’s expanding adoption of technology-enabled consumer services. Among the 11 markets surveyed, India ranked second globally for AI shopping adoption, with 76% of consumers using AI tools, behind China at 80% and above the global average of 53%.
The survey also highlighted strong consumer confidence in AI-powered shopping tools in India. Around 87% of Indian AI users said they trusted AI chat and search tools, compared with the global average of 73%. Globally, millennials and Gen Z recorded AI shopping adoption rates of 63% and 62%, respectively, exceeding the overall average. However, trust among younger consumers was comparatively lower, with 67% of Gen Z AI users globally expressing confidence in AI chat and search tools. The survey covered approximately 21,000 consumers across 11 markets, including India, China, the United States and the United Kingdom. McKinsey noted that the adoption figure for Indian baby boomers was indicative, as it was based on fewer than 100 respondents. The findings underline the growing role of AI-assisted product discovery and purchasing decisions in India’s evolving retail landscape.
