On Independence Day, at least five village panchayats in Tamil Nadu will fly the Khadi national flags made solely by the Avvai Ashram of the Gandhigram Trust in Sivasailam.
The Gandhigram Trust, located in Tamil Nadu's southern region of Tirunelveli, has been motivated by the government's "Har Ghar Tiranga" campaign to produce 5,000 Khadi flags. The flags would be provided to the local panchayats free of charge to assist the villagers in flying the national tricolour atop their homes or on their property.
The Gandhigram Trust plans to complete the manufacturing by August 12 in order to expedite the distribution of the flags to local panchayats. On average, 500 to 600 flags are created daily. The workers, who are primarily women, were trained as part of the trust's livelihood initiative, and they would be provided employment throughout the year.
