India and the United Arab Emirates signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) - Delhi in Abu Dhabi, which might be the second IIT outside of India after Tanzania.
The MoU was inked in Abu Dhabi following discussions between UAE President Mr. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi.
During a virtual summit in February last year, the two leaders agreed to establish the Indian Institute of Technology in the UAE. The two leaders expressed their support and agreement for IIT Delhi - Abu Dhabi to open in January 2024 and offer a Master's programme in Energy Transition and Sustainability. Other Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD level programmes are scheduled to be provided beginning in September 2024, as well as the establishment of research centres in the domains of sustainable energy, climate studies, computers, and data sciences, according to a joint statement made after the discussion.
The two parties also issued a separate joint statement on climate change, recognising the urgent need to address the global challenge of climate change through global collective action while respecting the foundational principles and obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement. The leaders agreed to strengthen collaboration on climate ambition, decarbonization, and clean energy, and to work together to achieve tangible and meaningful outcomes from the UNFCCC Conference of Parties' 28th session.
The two leaders agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, including oil, gas, and renewables. Both parties will expand their collaboration in green hydrogen, solar energy, and grid connectivity. Both parties also committed to enhancing investment across the energy spectrum, notably in India's Strategic Petroleum Reserve Programme.
The leaders committed to deepening bilateral cooperation to improve marine security and connectivity in the region in order to promote prosperity in India, the UAE, and the shared neighbourhood. They also agreed to increase defence exchanges, experience sharing, training, and capacity building.
