Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari will launch the long-awaited Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) on August 22, 2023.
This plan represents a significant step forward in the Government of India's commitment to improve road safety by improving the safety standards of motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. The scheme intends to give automobile consumers a tool to compare the crash safety of motor vehicles available in the market.
Automobile manufacturers may voluntarily submit their vehicles for testing in accordance with Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197 under this scheme. The car will be given star ratings for Adult Occupants (AOP) and Child Occupants (COP) based on its performance in the testing.
Potential automobile buyers can use these star ratings to evaluate the safety standards of various vehicles and make an informed purchase decision.
It is projected that demand for safer cars would rise, prompting automakers to meet customer demands. With rigorous safety standards, Indian cars will be able to compete better in the global market, improving the export potential of Indian car manufacturers. The plan is aimed to establish a safety-conscious automobile market in India.
