Mr. Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Consumer Affairs & Food & Public Distribution and Textiles, launched new initiatives which include the right to repair portal, an NTH mobile application, and opened new premises of the National Consumer Helpline centre in Delhi.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed by the Department of Consumer Affairs and Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, and launched a capacity-building programme of consumer commissions.
On the occasion of National Consumers Day, Mr. Piyush Goyal praised the consumer commissions for disposing of a higher number of pending cases in the last six months. He further stated that the disposal of pending cases would be worked upon, and the backlog will soon be eliminated. The minister explained that a complaint must be resolved under the Consumer Protection Law within 90 days of filing and within 150 days in cases where expert testimony is necessary.
Mr. R K Agrawal, President, the National Consumer Disputed Redressal Commission (NCDRC) said, “no one expects a case to be decided overnight. However, difficulty arises when the actual time taken for disposal of the case far exceeds its expected life span and a question is raised about the efficacy and efficiency of consumer commissions."
