The newly formed National Turmeric Board completes its first year, a fact that empowers turmeric farmers and places the golden spice of India in the world market, says Union Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Piyush Goyal. Formed to strengthen India's turmeric value chain, from cultivation and research to foreign trade, it has helped to increase the level of cultivation and open new opportunities for traders and exporters. India leads globally in turmeric production and trading, with most of its 30-odd native varieties gaining recognition, which includes GI tags. The Board's efforts are aimed at enhancing productivity, improving quality, and promoting the important drug and general uses of turmeric in foreign countries for better prospects among the growers and all stakeholders.
From day one, the Board has emphasized farmer support, quality processing, logistics, and export promotion to ensure that India’s turmeric retains relevance in demand across the globe. Such a move will help farmers in 20 states with improved infrastructure, more research inputs, and better market linkages, while exporters tap into new markets. And as global interest in health and wellness drives turmeric’s value in food, nutraceuticals, and related sectors, India’s leadership in the turmeric ecosystem is going to get even stronger. The Board’s performance in its maiden year underlines the government’s commitment to empowering agriculture and giving India a pride of place in the spice economy of the world.
