According to Crisil, India's national highway construction is likely to reach only 32-34 km per day during FY 2022-23 as input prices are expected to remain elevated owing to a rise in inflationary pressures. However, the pace of highway construction is expected to pick up post monsoon.

In 2020–21, the country's national highway (NH) construction rate reached a record-high of 37 km per day.

In FY 2022-23, Ministry of Road Transportation and Highways (MoRTH) is expected to award 12,000-13,000 km of national highway projects, largely under Bharatmala, with uptake spurred by developer friendly measures under Atmanirbhar Bharat that have been extended till October 2022.

According to Crisil, awarding would need to scale up significantly over the course of the following nine months in order to meet the ministry's ambitious target of constructing 50 km per day.
