The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to commence work on a proposed 190-km, six-lane high-speed Outer Ring Road (ORR) around Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh. The project has been divided into four construction packages, with the total construction length reaching 195.13 km, including a 5.2-km spur road near Guntur. The Centre has estimated the civil construction cost at Rs. 10,596 crore (US$ 1.12 billion), while the overall project cost, including land acquisition and other components, is estimated at Rs. 30,491 crore (US$ 3.21 billion). The corridor is designed to connect major highways and emerging urban areas while providing an alternative route for heavy vehicles travelling through the region.
Package 1 will cover 27 km near Kanchikacherla and include two tunnels measuring 2.7 km and 1.6 km. Package 2 will span 56 km, while Package 3 will cover 50.5 km and include the 5.2-km Narakoduru-Budampadu spur road and a 4.8-km bridge across the Krishna River near Valluripalem. Package 4 will extend across 55.5 km and include a 400-metre tunnel at Veerullapadu and a 3.15-km bridge across the Krishna River near Munnaluru. The corridor will feature three tunnels and two major Krishna River crossings. Once completed, the project is expected to improve regional connectivity, facilitate movement between highways and developing areas, and help separate long-distance traffic from local urban commuters.
